A summer of active fun for all Wonford residents at the Community Centre, on the playing fields and in the Valley Park.

Nordic Walking

Wonford Community and Learning Centre and Exe Nordic Walking are offering a free six-week course Nordic walking course to Wonford residents!
 
Nordic Walking is an enhanced walking technique that uses poles to work your upper body as well as your legs. It gives you a highly effective all over workout that doesn’t feel like one! Nordic Walking is a fun and social activity that can be enjoyed in town centres or open countryside throughout the year. A great activity to start moving more or take your love of walking to the next level.
 
Join Sue, a qualified Instructor, to learn the technique over a six-week course in a small group, making new friends, connecting with nature here in Wonford.
The first course will be on Thursdays 10 am to 11 am from 22nd July to 12th August with further sessions to be agreed between the group.
The second course will be on five Thursdays 10am to 11am from 19th August to 16th September with a sixth session to be agreed between group.
Poles can be borrowed from Wonford Community and Learning Centre.

Yoga Babies

Wonford Community and Learning Centre and yoga instructor Nikki Huddart are offering a free five-week Yoga Babies course to local residents!

A fun mix of yoga stretches and songs, as well as tips and techniques for calming and settling babies. No yoga experience or equipment needed just you, your baby and a blanket!

These sessions are free but places are limited so must be booked

Creating Art from Nature

Magic Carpet are providing four different art and craft opportunities. All of the sessions will involve a nature walk to help inspire a creative activity on the patio at Wonford Community Centre.

These sessions are all free but must be booked and places are limited. To enable as many people as possible to enjoy the activities we request that you book for one session only,

19th July, 3-5pm

A walk collecting leaves / flower heads etc. to use for a relaxed drawing/ painting session, exploring the wonder of colour and pattern in nature. We’ll be looking at artists / illustrators like Georgia O’Keefe and Angie Lewin.

26th July 3-5pm

Felting ‘in the round’ Walking in the surrounding area looking at the subtle patterns and colours found in nature and stones, then going on to create wet felted pebbles and beads.

Friday 6th August 10-12pm

Making and photographing ‘Nature Mandalas’, looking at artists like Andy Goldsworthy. You will need to bring a mobile phone or camera.

9th August 3 -5pm

Wet Felted Landscapes. Taking a walk to look at the landscape and to talk about what’s in it, followed by a session working with merino wool to create colourful textured relief images.

Meet at Wonford Community Centre and wear suitable footwear and clothing for the weather conditions. Bring a waterproof, sunhat/cream as appropriate and a drink.

Yoga Tots

Local resident Jane will lead a 30 to 40 minute yoga session aimed at 2 to 6 year olds.

There will be a warm up with easy stretches followed by engaging with a story through yoga poses and finally a brief guided meditation lying on floor with eyes closed focussing on breathing and calming

Children will need to be accompanied by a parent/carer who is  encouraged to take part with their children.

The sessions are from 10am on Friday 23rd July and 6th August. If it is dry they will take place on the field behind the Community C entre (inside if raining)

The sessions are free but must be booked – there are spaces for 12 toddlers/children on each session. Please email wclcentre@outlook.com to book your place.

Family Playdays

Free summer holiday fun for families in the Community Centre, on the field and in Ludwell valley!  Plus a free picnic lunch.

Sessions run from 11am to 3pm on Tuesday August 3rd, 10th and 17th

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The Family Playdays are provided by WASP (Wonford and St Pauls) Project and Wonford Community and Learning Centre.

Cycle Festival

Come along to Wonford Playing Fields on 29th July between 10 am and 2pm for the Active Devon Cycle Festival and learn more about getting on your bike!

A fun event for the whole family with ‘have a go’ activities on various bikes from balance bikes to adaptable bikes and even try making your own smoothie on our smoothie bike! Free tea and coffee for the adults  and soft drinks for the kids. There will also be an arts and craft stall, a listening post and advice stalls.

Gentle Walk

A 30min Gentle Group Walk on Wednesday 21st July

Westbank Walking for Health is a programme of Health Walks in Exeter, Mid Devon and the Westbank areas and offers the chance to explore the outdoors, get to know the local area and meet new friends.

This is an opportunity for Wonford residents to be welcomed to the regular Wednesday Walking for Health walk that meets outside the Community and Learning Centre at 10.30am.

The walk of up to 30mins around the playing fields is on flat ground or gentle slopes with mainly firm surfaces and no steps or stiles. There will be the option to stay on after the walk for tea, coffee and a chat at the Community and Learning Centre.

Moderate Walk

Inclusive Exeter Park Walks are an opportunity for informal light physical activity exploring different parks. One of the Park Walks is here in Wonford on Tuesday evenings.

As part of the Wonford Activity Days programme Inclusive Exeter are holding a special introductory one hour walk on 27th July meeting outside Wonford Sports Centre at 5.15pm.

Self-guided Ludwell Walk

Take a circular stroll from the Wonford Community and Learning Centre over the Panny and into Ludwell Valley Park, and back again via Ludwell Lane.

Devon Wildlife Trust have designed this circular walk that’s just over mile long, for anyone wishing to discover Ludwell or try a new route. There’s one steep hill, but you can take a shortcut to avoid it.

Explorer Activities

Join Devon Wildlife Trust for an hour of family time exploring what wildlife lives at Ludwell Valley Park. Free thanks to support of Players of Peoples Postcode Lottery.

Thursday 5th August: Brilliant birds: Learn to use binoculars to help you spot our feathered friends and make your own binoculars to take home.

Thursday 12th August: Marvellous Minibeasts: Bug hunting with our special equipment and some bug themed craft.

Brisk Walk, Jog or Run

Heavitree and Wonford Running Group meet every Wednesday evening outside Wonford Community Centre for a walk or runs of various distances all led by volunteer run/walk leaders.

On the 4th August there will be a taster session for the Heavitree and Wonford Running Group enabling participants to take part in a brisk walk, jog or run. You will need to register for this using the link

As part of their Creating Connections programme City Community Trust have organised a nature walk in Ludwell Valley on 20th July led by Chris Moulton of Devon Wildlife Trust.

Wonford Planters Summer Activity

Come along to Wonford Green (next to the Wonford Green Surgery) on Saturday 31st July and learn how to build bug hotels, bird boxes and hedgehog houses for your garden! Wood for Good will be showing us how using reclaimed wood from 10am.

There will be free refreshments and a chance to find out more about Wonford Planters – our local gardening group.

Please note that only those over 18 can participate.

Litter picking

Exeter City Council has provided litter picking equipment for general use around Wonford Playing Fields and Ludwell Valley Park between 12th July and 14th August 2021. These can be booked out by groups, families or individuals from Wonford Community and Learning Centre.

Exercise, fresh air and cleaning up your community all in one!
