Update: From 2019 Wonford Community and learning Centre has taken on the running of the exeter Parent Carer Forum. Supporting the volunteers who run the session ad manage the resources.  

The Exeter Parent Carer Network was founded by Stacy Hallett and Charlie Gray, both local parent carers who came together to address issues, concerns and share information that they have found whilst navigating their children’s diagnosis journey and its effect on family life.

The Exeter Parent Carer Cafe was the starting point for the venture, providing a place for parent carers to meet others in similar situations, have a break from what can often be an isolating life at home and to seek advice and find friendship.

Our aim is to provide information, support and resources through a variety of methods, to not only parent carers, but also siblings and professionals. 16.7% of children in Exeter have special educational needs – higher than the national average, but due to the financial climate, support and help from services and organisations is hard to come by for all but families in crisis. As such it is our aim to bridge the gap by providing information and support for all parent carers of children with additional needs.

As well as providing a space to meet, The Exeter Parent Carer Network use their knowledge and understanding to help educate others, such as local businesses and education establishments in an advisory capacity on issues such as inclusion or creating environments accessible to all.

Through generous funding, we have been able to provide a selection of sensory toys enabling parents to bring their children, essential for parents whose children are not in education, and who do not have childcare.
